The Wingfield Castle was one of
three paddle steamer ferries which maintained a River Humber crossing
service prior to the construction of the Humber Bridge, which links
East Yorkshire with Lincolnshire. The Wingfield Castle was built in 1934
at the Hartlepool yards of William Gray and Company. Predominantely
carrying foot passengers between Hull and New Holland, the Wingfield
Castle had provision on her main deck aft to carry a small number of
cars, and pens for livestock. Wingfield Castle continued to work the
ferry route, but, with the imminent construction of the Humber Bridge,
she was finally withdrawn in 1974, making her last journey from Hull.
