Picture of True Briton depicted leaving Wapping Docks on the Thames, London, c1863. Described as the ‘finest and last thing in Blackwall frigates’. Steamships were becoming a major competitor, establishing in 1838 a trans atlantic service. Speed to transport cargo and passengers was the answer for the sailing ship and so the design and forerunner to the clippers were the ‘Blackwall Frigates’. So called because they were built at the Blackwall Yard of Green & Wigram on the Thames.
