The opening of the Humber
Bridge in 1981 brought the Humber Ferry Service between Hull and New Holland
to a close. The service had run for many years with Wingfield Castle and
Tattershall Castle ferries. The countries last coal-fired paddle steamer,
the Lincoln Castle, was the last to be laid up shortly after the Humber
Bridge opened. The Humber Bridge was the longest single span suspension
bridge in the world until the construction of Denmark's Storebelt and
East Bridge in 1998. |
