John Gledhill wanted to draw and paint from early childhood. As a boy his parents would often take him to Ferens Art Gallery where there were plenty of pictures to stimulate his young mind. The paintings that most impressed him were those showing images of Hull and other cities with people.

Atkinson Grimshaw's paintings of Prince's Dock in Hull was always an attraction. He could almost feel the cold damp chill of the damp cobbled street and used to wonder what was going on inside the gas lit offices lining the street
The Hull Marine School of painters was also a great influence when John Gledhill was young. It was not only the sea and ships but also the backgrounds that interested him. John Ward's views from the river showing Hull's shoreline were a particular fascination. To see for example, The Minerva pub still the same then as it is today and the pier which, sadly no longer exists in its former glory.
