Roger Davies' reputation for great detail and realism in his paintings put him at the top of the field of marine artists working today.

This is a picturesque fishing village six miles south of Whitby, end of the Coast to Coast Walk and Lyke Wake Walk. The bay is guarded by high headlands, North Cheek, Ness Point and South Cheek, Old Peak. At the summit of the village the red roofed houses appear to overhang the cliff. At the bottom they encroach on the sea wall itself, so near at times that the tide thunders up the street and the bowsprit of a sail ship is reputed to have crashed through the windows of a pub. A pastiche of figureheads, drying nets, crab pots and lines and a hint of salty yarns and smugglers runs combine to make this one of the prettiest villages on the coast.
