Lancaster Bomber picture by Gary Saunt. The Avro Lancaster bomber plane of the Dambusters Squadron X fame, is the most successful RAF heavy bomber of World War Two. Squadron “X” was formed at R.A.F Scampton in 1943 and began training, flying and navigating at zero feet. They then switched to flying over water. Only on the eleventh hour did any of the crews find out what the real targets were.
